INTRODUCTION

To Whom It May Concern:

During my career I have provided consulting to major companies such as Texaco, Bloomberg, Sprint, CNN, Neiman Marcus, CSX, Ryder, Chicago Research and Trade, and General Electric. I am now seeking a seriously challenging technical position in the NE Atlanta area.

One of my major projects with CNN included video ingesting, storage, retrieval and playing of “hot” news feeds from satellites around the world. With over 25 years of experience, I have worked with over two dozen languages including Java and C# and a myriad of other technologies ranging from legacy to web, including both Unix and MS platforms. I continue to self educate on emerging technologies.

I have held the positions of developer, analyst, architect, project manager, consultant and manager. During my career, I have always been one of the “go to” guys in my departments. Search my resume for “research” and “difficult” for some more pertinent technical entries, and review my most recent employment. And don’t let my managerial experience fool you – I am still very technical and enjoy that aspect of my employment (See my current job with StatCom).

Current (Saba)

Corporate Escalation Engineer.

Responsible for resolving some of the most difficult customer issues. Typically related to stability and performance in a J2EE environment and requiring creative approaches for resolution.

Introduced support team to Eclipse and its uses in a support environment. Mentor to junior and senior members of the team.

Installed and managed JSPWiki for documentation of support issues. Managed Nutch and IIS for searching documents and issues.

Created numerous support tools, including Java tools to monitor DB response, chart Java GC information and other errors, deploy and compare Java archives (EAR, WAR, and JAR), compare databases' data metadata, search DB, automatically search and identify problem signatures, and augmented Saba application logging/diagnostics using Beanshell.

December 2004 through October 2005 (StatCom)

Senior Technical Engineer.

Researched and developed methods of improving efficiency of implementation services related to proprietary hospital patient workflow product.

Introduced implementation team to Eclipse. Developed Eclipse plugin (related to Eclipse Rich Client Platform) in Java that provided one button deployment, XML configuration validation using JAXP and Oracle database, and automatic rule generation that increased implementation productivity threefold (server-side Java with Javascript).

Designed and implemented custom rules using Javascript for two hospital clients.

Designed and wrote HL7 interface diagnostic tool using C#.

Installed and managed JSPWiki for quick capture of engineers knowledge.

Automated graphic image generation utilizing Visual Basic and Adobe Photoshop.

August 2001 – Promoted to Manager of Internet Services. In addition to previous duties, responsible for core technology of Macys and Bloomingdales shopping sites. Investigated methods to monitor, alert, analyze, and manage various components of the internet experience. Included research, development, hiring, design, project management, problem determination, and technical guidance.

Sept 2000 – Hired as Manager of Customer Self Service internet site. Responsible for delivery of customer service components of Federated Department Store websites based on IBM’s Websphere and Java related technologies.

March 1998 - Jan 2000 (Informix Software, Inc.)

Sept 1998 - As E-Commerce Practice Manager responsible for business development and delivery of Informix's new E-Commerce offering, i.Sell, in the Southeast. Brought Neiman Marcus online in five months.

June 1998 - As Project Manager coordinated activities of four companies (Virage, CNN, Informix, and Silicon Graphics) to deliver a web interface allowing ingesting, searching and viewing of recent news videos (and various multimedia) for CNN. Based on content management system previous developed.

March 1998 - As Principal Consultant worked with Informix clients to implement web sites utilizing Informix's database and WebBlade technology.

1998 – Research and development on content management system that eventually evolved into Informix’s Media360 system.

January 1997 – February 1998 (USWeb Atlanta)

Employed as consultant and developer. Worked on several web projects utilizing technology such as Netscape, VRML, Apache, IIS, ASP, Perl, Java, and C++. In my consulting role, provided research on the more esoteric aspects of web technology, including prototyping of virtual world technology utilizing VRML.

Sept 1995 - January 1997 (Security First Network Bank)

Nov 1996 - As Release Manager was responsible for product definition. Managed selection of features for each release of the internet banking software.

Feb 1996 - As Manager of Development Services responsible for the development environment, source code control management system, and the build process. Also managed MIS activites for entire company.

Sept 1995 - Project Manager for the internet banking software for the first bank on the internet. Also engaged in Software Development Manager activities.

March 1980 - Sept 1995 (Data General)

Sept 1989 - Transferred to the Systems Division as Principal Software Engineer. Engaged in presales, estimating, statements of work, project management, research and development using Unix, C, network and graphics programming. One of the very few given the most challenging and esoteric projects, requiring research and invention. Some of these projects resulted in the research and accomplishment of: a tiled format for the TIFF image format, a precursor of TCP/IP multicasting, and an internet crawler analogous to today’s web crawlers (such as that created by Google).

August 1984 - Moved to the Area Technical Services Group as Principal Software Engineer. Engaged in larger multi-million dollar opportunites in pre-sales and post-sales capacity mainly in the Southeast. Responsible for researching and resolving the most difficult technical and business problems encountered during the sales process. Technology supported included Unix, C, Ada, Lisp, Pascal, Computer Graphics and PL/1.

March 1980 - Worked in the Data General software support center. Initially joined the group as Software Engineer, promoted to Senior Software Engineer, and then to Manager. Responsible for investigating and resolving the more difficult customer issues.

Management Accomplishments:

Manager of Internet Services at Federated Systems Group, technology arm of Federated Department Stores. Responsible for core technology of Macys and Bloomingdales shopping sites and self service sites. E-Commerce Practice Manager for the Southeast region for Informix Software, Inc. Responsible for appropriate staffing and successful delivery of Informix's new E-Commerce offerings based on technology from Art Technology Group. Helped create nationwide team delivery of Informix’s i.Sell product line. Duties also include hiring, staffing, resource scheduling, and reviewing personnel.

Project Manager for intranet video browsing system for CNN newsroom. Facilitated cooperation and communication with four companies and more than three dozen people on the project. Utilized Informix's database and WebBlade technology.

Manager of Development Services at Security First Technologies. Managed a group of people who were responsible for product manufacturing, system configuration, version control, network administration, system administration, and other development support. Identified problems, facilitated sessions to find solutions, and managed implementation of solutions. Helped grow development organization from one dozen to about four dozen employees. Duties also included reviewing personnel, newhire interviews, resource scheduling, and staffing requirement analysis.

Toward the later part of my employment at Security First Technologies, also took on the responsibilities of Release Management - planning, defining, managing the release schedule of their internet banking product.

Took on the responsibilities of MIS at Security First Technologies. Managed a group of people that were responsible for company wide network support, system administration, and help desk functionality. Responsible for setting up hardware, software, accounts, etc., for new employees coming on board. (Security First Technologies grew from 30 people to about 160 in a year's time).

Member of management team that grew the DG Software Support Center from a dozen people to over 100 people in a period of about 4 years. Executed the duties of first line manager with responsibility for eleven people. Duties included reviewing personnel, newhire interviews, resource scheduling, staffing requirement analysis, and salary actions.

Project manager and consultant to Fortune 500, national and multinational corporations, in the fields of communications, power, oil exploration, securities, and health – including Texaco, Bloomberg, Chicago Research and Trade, Sprint, GTE, Newfoundland Power and Electric, and CNN.

Internet and Network Accomplishments:

Provided technical design and implementation for web site at Synchrologic. Included database driven notification web page, problem reporting pages, search pages, and contact pages that email designated personnel and store information in database. Required implementation of secure pages. Utilized MS Active Server Pages, ADO, MS Index Server, MS Internet Information Server, MS SQL Server, and extended HTML.

Security Consultant to W. R. Berkley Corporation, and also provided consulting for intranet site for Insurance agents. Utilized Informix database and Informix WebBlade technology.

Researched and wrote demonstration of Java Servlets utilizing Sun's Java Server Development Kit (JSDK) and JDBC for USWeb. Web pages were created to demonstrate the "write once, run anywhere" philosophy of Java. The same demonstration Java servlets were installed to work with Microsoft's IIS, Netscape's FastTrack, and Sun's JavaServer.

Repaired and completed programming for a Java storefront website. Utilized Symantec Visual Cafe, HTML, Unix, Apache server, and Kaffe.

Project Manager for the Virtual Bank Manager software created by Security First Technologies, the company that created the world's first Internet Bank - Security First Network Bank. Project manager for the software development from version 1.0 to 2.0. Utilized MS Project Manager.

Architect of internal web pages for Security First Technologies. Designed web documents and instituted policy to share information and documents company wide (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and other data). Utilized CGI, HTML, SQL, Informix, Perl, and Unix scripts.

Project leader and major technical contributor in porting Apollo's communication product, NCS (Network Computing Software), to both DG/UX (Unix) and AOS/VS. Utilized C, Unix, TCP/IP (sockets), and AOS/VS (DG's proprietary operating system). NCS is a grandfather to CORBA.

Explored solutions for a dynamic, database-driven newsletter. Utilized C++, ISAPI, and ODBC while at USWeb.

Researched ways to retrieve information from the internet (before the web). As a result, wrote custom "webcrawler" for DG's internal use (before these types of programs were called "webcrawlers"). Consisted of a program that automatically contacted computers in the Internet, retrieved file listings, and created a database of files retrieved (Functionally, much the same as Archie is today, but before Archie's time). Written in C and ran on DG/UX (Unix).

Part of a team that ported TCP/IP and associated TCP/IP clients (FTP, Telnet, etc.) to DG's proprietary AOS/VS operating system. Written in C and ran on AOS/VS and DG/UX (Unix).

Research and development on a custom network print server that runs on both DG/UX (Unix) and DG's proprietary AOS/VS. Utilized C and Unix.

Researched web technology when first introduced. Installed Web Servers for local DG office. Created and maintaining several components of DG's corporate wide Web. Includes experience with HTML and CGI.

Installed and managed Unix network for DG Systems Integration Services group, including NFS, NIS, TCP/IP, X-Windows, Motif, and named.

Graphics and Multimedia Accomplishments

Research team lead in development of a multi-million dollar client-server implementation of an image storage and retrieval system for oil exploration. Utilized Unix, C, X-Windows, and Motif. Created an image server and viewer capable of storing and displaying images as large as 200 megabytes.

Automated color changes for web graphics utilizing Visual Basic and Adobe Photoshop. Investigated and resolved the more difficult technical problems.

Created interactive marketing tool for use at annual DG User's Group conference using Asymetrix Toolbook, using a mixture of graphics images and text. Ran under MS Windows.

Designed graphics and layout for CD for Echo Lake Records. Used Photoshop and Pagemaker.

Developed prototype for an interactive directory for Gwinnett Mall using Amiga and Director. Intended for use in a kiosk. Utilized custom graphics developed on the Amiga, and scripting capabilities of Director.

Part of a team that wrote an image storage and retrieval system utilizing client-server technology, C/C++, MS Windows, TCP/IP, Windows sockets, and Unix. Responsible for investigating challenging imaging performance issues.

Technical consultant for interactive television project for GTE's Mainstreet. Unix, MS Windows, and C environment. Responsible for investigating the more difficult technical issues encountered by GTE.

Technical advisor for port of color matching software for Data General Unix workstations. UtilizedX-Windows, C, and DG/UX (Unix).

Primary technical consultant and project leader for design and programming of imaging, object technology, client-server, database, and communications projects utilizing C/C++, Microsoft Windows, UNIX, and X-Windows.

Award winning artist and photographer. Jury selected on numerous occasions for gallery exhibitions.

Other Accomplishments

Created an order processing and quoting system for Oracle products, utilizing MS Excel, MS Word, and Visual Basic for Applications. Reduced the amount of time for order processing from days to hours. Reduced the time to create quote forms, purchase requests, and specialized forms from hours to minutes.

Implemented a Pipeline Forecasting Model for Sales using Excel and MS Visual Basic for Applications.

Designed and implemented routines to emulate VAX system service calls under UNIX for a process control system.

Provided presales System Engineers with technical information and training for a wide variety of products, including Unix, C, Ada, Lisp, Pascal, Graphics and PL/1. Responsible for resolving the more difficult technical and business problems.

Provided technical phone support for DG customers on a wide variety of DG products. Provided training and consulting for Support Center personnel.
